Met Opera and MoMA Stage Dual Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Productions
On May 14, the Metropolitan Opera will debut 'El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego,' featuring music by Gabriela Lena Frank and a libretto by Nilo Cruz, both of whom are Pulitzer Prize recipients. The set and costume designer, Jon Bausor, also collaborated with curator Beverly Adams on a related exhibition at MoMA titled 'Frida and Diego: The Last Dream.' This opera, which first premiered in San Diego in 2022, envisions the spirit of Kahlo reuniting with Rivera during the Day of the Dead. Bausor's designs draw inspiration from the artists, showcasing a cracked earth stage and scaffolding reminiscent of Rivera's murals. The opera will be performed until June 5, while the exhibition runs until September 12, featuring Kahlo's self-portraits and Rivera's works, along with watercolors for Carlos Chávez's 1932 ballet 'H.P. (Horsepower).'
