Met Opens 12,000-Sq-Ft Condé Nast Galleries for Fashion Near Great Hall
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has introduced the Condé M. Nast Galleries, a nearly 12,000-square-foot exhibition area crafted by the Brooklyn firm Peterson Rich Office. This relocation of fashion exhibits from a hidden basement to a prominent site next to the museum's renowned Great Hall marks a significant shift in the museum's approach to fashion. Architects Miriam Peterson and Nathan Rich designed five interconnected rooms, repurposed from a previous courtyard and gift shop, utilizing a subtle palette of grey marmorino plaster, limestone arches, and large oak doors to harmonize with the museum's Beaux-Arts style while allowing for adaptable displays. The opening exhibition, "Costume Art," curated by Andrew Bolton, showcases around 200 garments and accessories alongside 200 pieces of artwork, examining themes like "The Classical Body," "The Aging Body," and "The Disabled Body." This initiative is part of a broader renovation at The Met, which also includes updates to dining areas, retail spaces, and the public entrance at 83rd Street and Fifth Avenue.
