Met Museum Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Moon Landing with 'Apollo's Muse'

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York presents 'Apollo's Muse: The Moon in the Age of Photography', a comprehensive exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Curated by Mia Fineman and Beth Saunders, the show spans four centuries of lunar imagery, from Galileo's 1610 drawings to contemporary art. The exhibition is organized into five sections: 'Mapping the Moon' features early astronomical illustrations by Galileo, Francesco Fontana, and Johannes Hevelius; 'The Satellite in Photography' highlights early lunar daguerreotypes by John William Draper and works by Warren De La Rue, Lewis Morris Rutherfurd, and John Adams Whipple; 'Daydreams by Moonlight' includes imaginary lunar voyages from Jules Verne and Georges Méliès, alongside Romantic paintings by Caspar David Friedrich and Edward Steichen; 'Moonshot' documents the Space Race and the 1969 landing with photographs of astronauts and Soviet space dogs; 'Art after Apollo' presents works by Robert Rauschenberg, Nam June Paik, Nancy Graves, and contemporary artists like Aleksandra Mir and Kiki Smith. The exhibition runs until September 22, 2019, at the Met's Fifth Avenue location.
