Met Gala 2026 Moves to New Condé Nast Galleries, Celebrates Fashion as Art

The 2026 Met Gala, scheduled for the first Monday of May, signifies a significant milestone as the Costume Institute unveils its new permanent location in the Condé M. Nast Galleries, a 12,000-square-foot area adjacent to the Metropolitan Museum's Great Hall, previously the museum's gift shop. This represents a substantial enhancement from the prior 4,800-square-foot basement venue. The exhibition, named "Costume Art," investigates the blend of fashion and art through the human form, with a dress code of "Fashion Is Art." Curator Andrew Bolton described it as a pivotal moment for fashion's recognition in the art sphere. Co-chairs include Anna Wintour, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé, attending her first Met Gala in ten years. The event has its roots in 1948, initiated by publicist Eleanor Lambert at the Waldorf Astoria, and was further developed by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland in the 1970s. A pre-party took place at Madame Tussauds featuring Chloe Malle, Simone Ashley, and Teyana Taylor.
