Met Gala 2023 to Honor Karl Lagerfeld with Exhibition
The 2023 Met Gala, the annual fundraising event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, will be dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld (Hamburg, 1933 – Paris, 2019). The gala will take place on May 1, 2023, and coincides with the opening of the exhibition "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" on May 5, 2023. The exhibition will feature 150 garments and sketches, exploring Lagerfeld's creative process from two-dimensional sketches to three-dimensional designs, highlighting his work for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his own label. The title references William Hogarth's aesthetic theory of the "line of beauty." Met director Max Hollein described Lagerfeld as "one of the most captivating, prolific, and recognizable forces in fashion and culture." Curator Andrew Bolton noted that the exhibition will trace the evolution of Lagerfeld's creations, uniting his diverse body of work across multiple fashion houses. Proceeds from the gala will fund the Costume Institute's exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions.
