Met Costume Institute Moves to Prime Ground-Floor Space

institutional · 2026-04-13

The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has moved to a new 12,000-square-foot space known as the Condé M. Nast galleries. Located on the main floor, adjacent to the information desk in the Great Hall, this area replaces the previous gift shop. This marks a significant step for the fashion department, which now has a prominent presence in the museum. The inaugural exhibit, titled "Costume Art," showcases garments and artworks that delve into concepts related to the human form. This transition underscores the increasing relevance of fashion within cultural institutions, particularly as it ranks among the Met's top attractions.
