Met Brings Andrea della Robbia's 'Assumption of the Virgin' Out of Storage After 70 Years

The exhibition 'Rediscovering della Robbia at The Met' at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York showcases a remarkable collection of works by the della Robbia family, renowned Renaissance sculptors, for the first time in over 150 years. Highlighting the display is Andrea della Robbia's 'Assumption of the Virgin' (1485), a piece gifted by founding trustee Henry G. Marquand in 1882, which remained unseen for nearly 70 years. The exhibition also includes anticipated donations from Dick Wolf, producer of 'Law and Order,' and utilizes the Met's extensive collection, the largest of its kind in the U.S. Featuring works by Andrea, Luca, and workshop pieces like 'The Lehman Madonna' (ca. 1470–75) and 'Dovizia (Abundance)' (ca. 1515–25), the show runs until January 17, 2028. Met CEO Max Hollein emphasized the exhibition's aim to highlight the emotional and visual power of these sculptures, marking the evolution from early to high Renaissance style.
