Met acquires rediscovered Rosso Fiorentino, NGA gets Salman Toor circular painting

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has recently added a painting by Rosso Fiorentino, titled Madonna and Child with Saint John the Evangelist (1512/13), to its collection. This Mannerist artwork, believed to have been lost for centuries, was rediscovered after cleaning revealed Saint John the Evangelist beneath layers of overpaint, aligning with Giorgio Vasari's description in Lives of the Artists. Fiorentino's oeuvre comprises only about two dozen known paintings. Meanwhile, the Siegerland Museum in Siegen, Germany, has obtained a 16th-century silver gilt goblet by Hans Rappolt I, measuring 48cm and adorned with intricate designs. Previously part of the Rothschild collection, the goblet was acquired with €75,000 from the German Federal Cultural Foundation. Additionally, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, received Wandering Beggars (2022), a circular oil painting by Salman Toor, marking the artist's first piece in their collection. Inspired by Van Gogh's The Sower (1888) and Picasso's Family of Saltimbanques (1905), Toor's first solo exhibition in Europe will debut at the Courtauld in London this October.
