Mestre's Cultural Revival: Pedestrian Zones, Museum M9, and Art Galleries

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

Mestre, the mainland part of Venice, is undergoing a cultural and urban renaissance. Piazza Erminio Ferretto has been pedestrianized and is accessible by tram from Piazzale Roma. The pedestrian area extends to Via Poerio, where the Marzenego river has been reopened, creating a pleasant dock. The Museo del Novecento (M9), designed by German architects Sauerbruch Hutton, opened with a €110 million investment over 9,000 sqm, targeting LEED Gold certification. Galleria Massimodeluca, founded by Marina Bastianello in 2012, is now at the center of a vibrant district, currently showing works by Agostino Bergamaschi and Paolo Brambilla until May 11. Other highlights include the Diemme coffee shop (from Padua, founded 1927), the Supergulp comic book store, the VEZ Civic Library at Villa Erizzo, and Officina del Gusto restaurant. The article by Marco Enrico Giacomelli appears in Artribune Magazine #49.
