Messina's Cittadella della Cultura: New Museum Complex from Former Hospital

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

In Messina, the Cittadella della Cultura, a new cultural center, will be established within the historic Regina Margherita hospital, a neoclassical structure dating back to the 1930s. The design team, headed by Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia alongside Acale, TFE ingegneria, Engineering Group, Archeolab, Moduloquattro architetti associati, Michelangelo Pugliese, Rosaria Toma, and Marija Golubovic, will undertake the restoration and enhancement of the site. This initiative includes careful restoration and internal renovations of pavilions one, two, and three, covering almost 10,000 square meters, which will serve museum purposes and accommodate the Soprintendenza. The archaeological museum will showcase artifacts from prehistoric, Greek, and Roman times, while also commemorating the tragic 1908 earthquake that claimed 120,000 lives and devastated Messina and Reggio Calabria. Exhibits will focus on educational access for the general public, featuring some items in secure outdoor settings and designated temporary exhibition spaces. Alfonso Femia remarked that the Cittadella della Cultura aims to attract cultural tourism, merging ancient history with the legacy of the 1908 earthquake, and emphasized that Regione Sicilia is fostering a significant cultural initiative on a European level.
