Messina Plans Antonello da Messina House Museum
Messina is set to create a Casa Museo dedicated to the Renaissance artist Antonello da Messina, a proposal put forth by Mayor Federico Basile and Culture Councillor Enzo Caruso in January 2023. The museum will host an interactive display highlighting the artist's life at the vacant Ismig building located on via Monsignor Bruno, which is owned by the city. The estimated cost has risen from €1.3 million to almost €3 million, with €600,000 already secured. Due to structural problems, the building will be demolished. The project awaits approval from the Soprintendenza ai Beni culturali, with architect Carmelo Celona in charge. Antonello, who lived from approximately 1425 to 1430 until his death in 1479, has works featured in a Siracusa exhibition until March 31.
