Mesnil Architectures Transforms Pyrenean Workshop into Tactile Home and Studio

In Laruns, France, Mesnil Architectures has converted a former vehicle repair shop into a living space and textile studio for an artist couple. The design emphasizes the reuse of materials and the rugged landscape of the Ossau Valley. By removing generic finishes and suspended ceilings, the studio showcases a strong timber frame and spacious areas. All dismantled components were meticulously cataloged; old floorboards were repurposed as ceiling panels and custom cabinetry, while structural joists became a woodshed and outdoor furniture. A mansard structure atop existing rafters offers a serene retreat within the exposed timber framework. The ground floor serves as a versatile studio and living area, featuring a worktable and shelving made from reclaimed materials. A mineral garden, composed of stones salvaged during demolition, echoes the appearance of dry riverbeds. The project involved a collaborative approach, with architects, local craftsmen, and clients engaging in ongoing dialogue, enabling real-time design adaptations. This initiative illustrates how reimagining traditional elements can create spaces that are both personal and environmentally attuned.
