Meriem Bennani's 'For My Best Family' at Fondazione Prada
Meriem Bennani's 'For My Best Family' opens at Fondazione Prada in Milan from October 31, 2024 to February 24, 2025. The exhibition spans two levels of the Podium, combining a large-scale kinetic installation and a new art film co-directed with Orian Barki. On the ground floor, 'Sole crushing' features hundreds of flip-flops animated by pneumatic systems into a musical performance, with a soundtrack by Cheb Runner. The installation references collective rituals, stadium spectacles, and the concept of Duende as described by Federico García Lorca. Upstairs, the film 'For Aicha' follows a Moroccan jackal filmmaker exploring her queer identity and relationship with her mother, blending documentary and 3D animation. The project took over two years to complete and is Bennani's most ambitious to date. An accompanying illustrated book, designed by Tiffany Malakooti, includes contributions from Miuccia Prada, Daniel Arnold, Maïa Tellit Hawad, Chrissie Iles, Norman M. Klein, Emily LaBarge, Lars LaLa, and Abdellah Taïa.
