Meriem Bennani's First Moroccan Exhibition Opens in Essaouira

exhibition · 2026-04-23

NG gallery will launch its inaugural exhibition in Essaouira, Morocco, featuring Meriem Bennani's trilogy 'Life on the CAPS' from December 13, 2025 to February 8, 2026. This marks Bennani's first exhibition in her home country. The trilogy (2018–22) comprises 'Party on the CAPS' (2018–19), 'Guided Tour of a Spill (CAPS Interlude)' (2021), and 'Life on the CAPS' (2022). Set on a fictional mid-Atlantic island called the CAPS (short for capsule), the narrative explores a dystopian world where teleportation has replaced air travel, and migrants intercepted during illegal teleports form a hybrid society with its own culture and resistance. Bennani blends live-action, CGI, and aesthetics from reality TV, music videos, documentary, and phone cameras. The trilogy has been shown at the Renaissance Society, Nottingham Contemporary, The Power Plant, Fondation Kamel Lazaar, and Art Gallery of New South Wales, and is held in collections including MoMA, the Guggenheim, Qatar Museums, Julia Stoschek Collection, Hartwig Art Foundation, and the Vega Foundation.
