Mercato Centrale Torino Opens with Art Performance by Maria Pecchioli

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Mercato Centrale Torino will open on April 3, 2019, at the Palafuksas building in Turin, designed by Massimiliano Fuksas in 1997. The opening features a performance by artist Maria Pecchioli, whose project 'Plotting the Central Body' has been accompanying the final construction weeks. The food market concept, founded in 2014 by restaurateur Umberto Montano and the Cardini-Vannucchi family's Human Company group, already operates in Florence and Rome, with a fourth location in Milan's Stazione Centrale planned for November. In Florence, Mercato Centrale has hosted installations by Daniel Buren (2014), Michelangelo Pistoletto (2015), Ai Weiwei (2016), UFO (2017), and Marco Lodola (2018). For Turin, Pecchioli's interdisciplinary research, started in 2012 as 'Plotting the Urban Body,' uses Taoist philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine to map urban energy. The project includes a workshop on March 2, a performance on March 16, and a film screening on March 24, culminating in the April 3 opening performance. Pecchioli has previously activated the project in Milan, New York, and Saint Louis.
