Menorca's Morella Vell: A Masterclass in Climate-Responsive Architecture

The restored Morella Vell estate in eastern Menorca showcases architect Antonio Obrador's approach to hot-climate architecture. The project, which began in 2004 and concluded in 2011, transformed a semi-ruined dairy farm into a multi-building residence surrounded by 100 hectares of protected land. Obrador, founder of Estudio Antonio Obrador based in Palma, Mallorca, emphasizes designing in harmony with the outdoors and respecting local vernacular. The estate features a circular pool that emulates agricultural forms, restored stone cowsheds converted into guest quarters and entertaining areas, and a talaiot—an ancient Stone Age temple—discovered during the project, which necessitated relocating a basement and reconstructing a structure. The interiors include art books, Balearic textiles, and Cristian Valdés's 1970s chairs, reflecting a lived-in aesthetic. Obrador's studio, founded in 1980, is known for projects like Cap Rocat, a former military fort turned five-star hotel in 2010. The architect criticizes the homogenization of architecture and advocates for singularity and respect for each site. The estate's design responds to the island's strong tramuntana winds, with south-facing guillotine windows and shaded patios. The project highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary needs.
