Mémoire et lumière: Japanese Photography 1950-2000 at MEP
The summer of 2017 saw the unveiling of the exhibition 'Mémoire et lumière, photographie japonaise 1950-2000' at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris, which highlights postwar Japanese photography sourced from the Dai Nippon Printing Co. collection, a donation made to MEP in the 1990s. The exhibit comprises 540 photographs and 1,300 publications, with approximately 350 items on view. It showcases the works of 21 photographers, including Ihei Kimura, Shoji Ueda, and Yasushiro Ishimoto. A moving segment focuses on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, featuring portraits of survivors by Hiromi Tsuchida and Shomei Tomatsu's piece 'Watch recovered at approx. 0.7 km from the epicenter, 1961.' Additionally, Galerie Christophe Gaillard and Galerie 1900-2000 exhibit conceptual Japanese photography from the 1970s.
