Mélodie Mousset's VR project with hospitalized children in Turin

digital · 2026-05-04

French artist Mélodie Mousset (born 1981 in Abu Dhabi, based in Zurich) created a new version of her virtual reality project HanaHana in collaboration with hospitalized children at the Regina Margherita Hospital in Turin. Originally conceived in 2016 as a representation of her bodily unconscious in VR, the work was redeveloped with young patients from the Pediatric Oncohematology ward, facilitated by the nonprofit Dear Onlus, which specializes in humanizing hospital environments through multidisciplinary teams in art, design, pedagogy, psychology, and anthropology. The children participated in workshops that informed the final installation, viewable via Acer Windows Mixed Reality headsets. The project aims to provide a unique educational experience and break down the physical barrier between inside and outside the hospital. The work was presented last November in the Ex-MOI district of Turin, commissioned by the collective Treti Galaxie.
