Melissa Meyer Creates Monumental Murals for Tokyo Skyscraper, Reflecting on 9/11 and Collage Aesthetics

artist · 2026-04-22

Melissa Meyer has finished her most significant artworks—two murals located at the Shiodome City Center in Tokyo, which stands as the tallest skyscraper at 43 stories. One mural measures 10 feet in height and 60 feet in length, while the other is a square spanning 40 feet. The atrium also showcases pieces by Matthew Ritchie and Zhan Wang. Commissioned by art consultant Sarina Tang prior to the September 11 attacks, Meyer found solace in this project as she witnessed the fall of the Twin Towers. The extensive planning involved collaboration with architect Wendy Evans Joseph. Influenced by collage techniques and Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, Meyer co-authored 'Waste Not Want Not' in the 1970s and has taught at Skowhegan, currently serving on Yaddo's board. The murals were created in Queens and at Skowhegan.
