Melissa Meyer and Andrea Belag present contrasting abstract painting exhibitions in New York galleries

In New York, two simultaneous exhibitions highlight different approaches to abstract painting. At Elizabeth Harris Gallery, Melissa Meyer’s display, open until November 8, 2003, showcases nine canvases that embody her lyrical abstraction, drawing inspiration from digital technology and expansive murals, including those at Tokyo's Shiodome City Center. Her artwork merges calligraphic lines with vibrant color fields, reminiscent of Sam Francis. Meanwhile, Andrea Belag’s "New Paintings," available at Bill Maynes Gallery until November 15, 2003, features smaller pieces characterized by subdued hues. Belag also organized "White: A Group Show," which includes works by Dorothea Rockburne, William Pope L., and Lois Dodd. Both galleries are located at 529 West 20th Street, New York City. Meyer's latest diptych, "Duetto" (2003), illustrates her evolving compositional techniques.
