Meghann Stephenson's 'Queen of the Neighborhood!' Explores Femininity and Perfectionism at Half Gallery

Los Angeles-based artist Meghann Stephenson presents her latest series, 'Queen of the Neighborhood!', at Half Gallery in New York from September 9 to October 8. The exhibition features oil paintings of gossamer women against dark fields, probing themes of femininity, self-destructive perfectionism, and the female gaze. The title is drawn from the Bikini Kill feminist-punk anthem 'Rebel Girl', which Stephenson interprets as a compliment rather than an insult. The show includes a canvas for each of the nine circles of Dante's Inferno, reimagined through a female perspective, with violence and vanity rendered with quiet eeriness. Works such as 'Feels Like Drowning' depict a protagonist calmly swallowed by a cloud, while 'The Mastermind' shows five uncannily similar girls in a circle, prompting questions about sinister assumptions. Stephenson's paintings follow the lineage of artists like Anna Weyant and Alex Katz, but with signature surrealism. Her subjects wear filmy, timeless nightgowns to evoke vulnerability, set in dreamlike or nightmarish undefined spaces. The artist, who grew up in a Virginia suburb, explores the tension between natural and unnatural, as seen in scenes with unkempt or manicured grass and a woman trapped by a white picket fence. Stephenson embraces accidents in her meticulous process, noting that letting go allows for magic. The series was featured in Galerie Magazine's 2026 Fall Issue as part of its 'Artists to Watch' section.
