Medieval Mile Museum in Kilkenny blends ancient and contemporary architecture

The Medieval Mile Museum in Kilkenny, Ireland, designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects, has transformed the 13th-century St. Mary's Church into a museum showcasing medieval artifacts. Acquired by Kilkenny Borough Council in 2010 with support from Kilkenny County Council and the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the restoration preserves the original cruciform stone structure and tower while introducing contemporary materials. The north nave and chancel retain their original plan but feature a new internal section with modern materials. The chancel now houses a large glass window overlooking the River Nore and eastern districts, and floor skylights reveal underlying archaeological excavations. New gable-shaped elements are clad in lead sheets, creating a striking chromatic homogeneity that distinguishes the intervention from the original. The museum is surrounded by a walled cemetery suspended above High Street. Kilkenny, once Ireland's medieval capital, retains its historic charm with landmarks like Kilkenny Castle (housing part of the National Gallery), St. Canice's Cathedral, and Black Abbey. The city hosts the Kilkenny Arts Festival in August, attracting creatives to its craft centers, workshops, and artist studios. Local lore includes the story of Alice Kyteler, accused of witchcraft in 1324, who fled execution. The city's green harp flag was first flown on May 10, 1642, when the Confederation of Kilkenny was established.
