Mécènes du Sud's Parallel Projects at Manifesta 13 Marseille
The fifth episode of 'artpress à Marseille' focuses on corporate patronage at Manifesta 13 through the collective Mécènes du Sud. While the biennial itself lacked deep corporate collaborations, Mécènes du Sud supported several satellite events under the Parallèles du Sud program. In Monaco, Mélanie Matranga (2020 laureate) exhibited at Furiosa. In Marseille, the cabanon Palama project and the group show 'Liminal' at Art-cade featured residency outcomes by Kévin Cardesa, Tzu-Chun Ku, Aurélien Meimaris, and Flore Saunois. Mécènes du Sud also organized two exhibitions at Carta-Associés spaces: 'Does the angle between two walls have a happy ending?' with Amandine Simonnet and Gilles Pourtier. Pourtier's photogram series 'l’Obscurité est si solidement établie en nous' used glass from a bank door shattered during a Gilets jaunes protest, exploring illusory transparency. At 33, Ymane Fakhir (2017 laureate) presented 'As We Go Along', including the film 'Belvédère' about La Castellane housing estate, avoiding direct depiction of the buildings. The article critiques Manifesta's social ambitions versus actual outcomes.
