Mecanoo's Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi Opens on Saadiyat Island

The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, designed by Dutch firm Mecanoo, has opened on Saadiyat Island, joining a cluster of iconic museums by starchitects including Jean Nouvel's Louvre Abu Dhabi, Foster + Partners' Zayed National Museum, and Frank Gehry's soon-to-open Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The 35,000-square-metre building sits on an 82,000-square-metre site, clad in white pinstriped concrete. Its design is inspired by the region's geological formations and wadis, with a pentagonal geometry repeated like cellular structures. The museum features passive design measures such as openings, shaded outdoor spaces, and planters acting as thermal buffers. Visitors enter through a lobby displaying the museum's largest dinosaur skeletons under sculpted skylights. The exhibition sequence follows a chronological journey from the Big Bang to current climate challenges, culminating in a gallery housing rare dinosaur specimens. The museum is accessible to the public without a ticket, with terraces, shaded passages, and three pathways connecting the waterfront to surrounding cultural institutions.
