Maya the Bee Turns 50: The First Eco-Animated Series

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

On April 1, 1975, Japanese television network NET aired the first episode of Maya the Bee, a proto-ecological animated series that became a global phenomenon. The show was initially produced by Studio Zuiyo (known for Heidi and Vicky the Viking) and later by Nippon Animation. It was based on Waldemar Bonsels' 1912 children's novel Maya the Bee and Her Adventures, followed by The People of the Sky in 1915. The series was a co-production between Germany (ZDF), Austria (ORF), and Japan (ABC). The original 1975 series introduced characters like Maya, a curious young bee; Willy, a lazy drone created for the show; Flip, a wise grasshopper; Miss Cassandra, the teacher bee; Tecla the spider; Kurt the beetle; and Alexander the mouse. In the 1980s, a second season was produced, totaling over 100 episodes. In Italy, Maya the Bee aired on RAI in the early 1980s, with the theme song sung by Katia Svizzero becoming a hit. In 2012, Belgian production company Studio 100 launched a CGI reboot, Maya the Bee, co-produced with European broadcasters, consisting of 78 episodes. Bonsels' original novel contained nationalist and Nazi-sympathizing themes, but the animated series transcended these, becoming an icon of ecology and nature appreciation.
