MAXXI unveils archive of Incontri Internazionali d’Arte

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A new study space has opened at the MAXXI museum in Rome, presenting materials from the archive of Incontri Internazionali d’Arte, an association founded in 1970 by Graziella Lonardi Buontempo. The archive was donated to MAXXI in 2012 by Gabriella Buontempo, the founder's granddaughter, and includes thousands of documents, photographs, audio and video recordings. For the first time, the archive is displayed as a complex system, featuring items from the association's early years (1970–1981), a period curated by critic Achille Bonito Oliva. The exhibition, curated by Luigia Lonardelli, includes reproductions, original documents, voices, and films, and allows visitors to consult hundreds of digitized materials, transforming a private collection into shared memory.
