Maxxi Triples Permanent Collection Space with New Layout

institutional · 2026-05-05

The Maxxi museum in Rome has revealed a significant reorganization of its permanent collection, expanding exhibition space threefold with the initiative 'The Place To Be.' President Giovanna Melandri described it as a 'laboratory of the future' and a 'civic platform.' Galleria 1 will showcase the revamped collection along with a permanent video gallery, while large installations will be displayed in Piazza Alighiero Boetti. Galleria 2 will host specialized collection exhibitions. Featured artists include Mario Merz and Alighiero Boetti, alongside projects from Naples' metro stations. The museum will offer free entry on specific days and is launching JACK Contemporary Arts TV. The exhibition lineup includes 15 new shows running into 2018, with the Young Architects Program transitioning to a biennial format.
