exhibition · 2026-05-05

The MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome has unveiled its 2016/2017 exhibition season, with a strong focus on identity, immigration, and sustainability. Director Hou Hanru emphasizes the museum's role as an open laboratory engaging with contemporary challenges. The season kicks off November 9 with three architecture exhibitions: 'The Japanese House' (until Feb 26), 'Carlo Scarpa e il Giappone' (until Feb 26), and 'Álvaro Siza – Sacro' (until Mar 26). A major retrospective of photographer Letizia Battaglia runs Nov 25 to Mar 26, and the first Italian exhibition of the MOCAK collection (Dec 7–Jan 22) features over 60 works. Previewing the upcoming Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art collaboration, two precious works are on display: Mark Rothko's 'N.2 (Yellow Center)' and Mohsen Vaziri Mogaddham's 'Scratches on the Earth' (1963). The museum has made its permanent collection free Monday to Friday and plans to expand gallery spaces. Collaborations include the Red Brick Art Museum in Beijing, Power Station of Art in Shanghai, Japan Foundation, Barbican Centre, and Museum of Modern Art Tokyo. The museum also exports shows like 'Bellissima' by Olivo Barbieri and a Superstudio exhibition to Shanghai.
