MAXXI Launches Contemporary Design Collection with 13 Acquisitions

institutional · 2026-04-27

The MAXXI museum in Rome has added 13 design pieces to its contemporary design collection, which has been curated by Lorenza Baroncelli since February 2023. This collection, on display until March 10, 2024, emphasizes contemporary designers rather than 20th-century archives. All works created post-2000 must have a cultural connection to Italy. Featured designers include Jasper Morrison (Trattoria Chair) and Objects of Common Interest (Tube Column), along with up-and-coming talents like Architetti Artigiani Anonimi and Bloc Studios. The collection encompasses product design, collectible design, and digital design. Led by president Alessandro Giuli, this initiative seeks to position MAXXI as Italy's foremost contemporary design hub. The collection debuted at Design Miami in collaboration with Alcova, with plans for annual acquisitions over the next five years.
