MAXXI L'Aquila to Double Down on Cultural Mission Under New President Alessandro Giuli
Alessandro Giuli, the newly appointed president of the Fondazione MAXXI, made his first institutional visit to MAXXI L'Aquila from February 1 to 3, 2023, accompanied by director Bartolomeo Pietromarchi and secretary general Francesco Spano. The visit aimed to consolidate and expand the network of collaborations and reaffirm the centrality of the MAXXI L'Aquila project. Giuli met with local authorities including Abruzzo Region President Marco Marsilio, Prefect Cinzia Teresa Torraco, L'Aquila Mayor Pierluigi Biondi, Fontecchio Mayor Sabrina Ciancone, and Gran Sasso d'Italia Chamber of Commerce President Antonella Ballone. He emphasized the museum's role as a strategic cultural hub, quoting Franco Summa's exhibition themes of 'AMARE' (love), 'PROGETTARE' (projecting), and 'ESSERE' (being). Mayor Biondi highlighted the museum's growth and integration into the local cultural context, expressing confidence in Giuli's leadership. Upcoming programming includes a double solo exhibition dedicated to Marisa Merz and Shilpa Gupta from April 1 to October 1, a new focus on artist Franco Summa in collaboration with Univaq, a self-built structure in Piazza Santa Maria Paganica for summer events developed with the University of L'Aquila's Department of Civil, Building-Architecture, Environmental Engineering, and the third edition of the PERFORMATIVE international festival in September, featuring performance art, dance, music, and theater.
