MAXXI L'Aquila Hosts Major Andrea Pazienza Retrospective

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The MAXXI L'Aquila is presenting a comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Andrea Pazienza, the influential Italian cartoonist and artist known for his irreverent and experimental style. Titled 'Andrea Pazienza. La matematica del segno,' the show opens on December 6, 2025, and runs until April 6, 2026. Curated by Giulia Ferracci and Oscar Glioti, the exhibition features approximately 300 early works—including ink drawings, watercolors, and marker pieces—that highlight Pazienza's fusion of painting and comics. The first chapter focuses on his formative years in Pescara from 1972 to 1982, where he created satirical vignettes targeting figures like his teacher Sandro Visca. A special section is devoted to the Laboratorio d'Arte Convergenze, where Pazienza held his first solo show in 1975. A second chapter will open at MAXXI Rome in spring 2026. Pazienza, born in San Benedetto del Tronto in 1956 and died in Montepulciano in 1988, remains a seminal figure in Italian visual culture, with characters like Pentothal and Zanardi defining his legacy.
