MAXXI joins Google's 'We Wear Culture' digital fashion exhibition

digital · 2026-05-05

The MAXXI museum in Rome has partnered with Google and over 180 cultural institutions worldwide for the 'We Wear Culture' project, which uses cutting-edge technology to explore fashion history from the Silk Road to punk. The digital exhibition includes a virtual component tied to MAXXI's 2014 show 'Bellissima. L’Italia dell’alta moda 1945 – 1968', curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, Anna Mattirolo, and Stefano Tonchi. Iconic pieces like Marilyn Monroe's heels and Chanel's little black dress are brought to life via VR, 360° video, Street View tours, and gigapixel images. The online platform features videos, photos, and insights into Italian fashion from 1945 to 1968, highlighting designers such as Emilio Schuberth, Sorelle Fontana, Valentino, and Roberto Capucci, alongside accessories by Bulgari and photographs by Pasquale De Antonis, Federico Garolla, and Ugo Mulas. MAXXI President Giovanna Melandri emphasized the museum's commitment to virtual audiences and the importance of using Google Arts & Culture to share and preserve cultural heritage. The exhibition is accessible at g.co/wewearculture and via the Google Arts & Culture app.
