Maxwell Mustardo's Ceramics Blend Tradition and Innovation

Maxwell Mustardo's ceramics transform everyday objects into multifaceted expressions of form and materiality. Currently an artist-in-residence at the Toshiko Takaezu Studio in New Jersey, Mustardo earned BFAs in Fine Arts and Art History & Theory from Alfred University in 2017. He describes his work as "polyphonic," emphasizing ceramics' ability to communicate on multiple levels. His practice centers on containers—simple forms like cups and vases—to explore themes of body, language, and function. By revisiting shapes and reformulating themes, he challenges static thinking and promotes the evolution of the medium. His creations blur the line between functional and artistic, inviting a rethinking of ceramics in contemporary culture.
