Max Perlingeiro Receives Ciccilo Matarazzo Award for Multifaceted Contributions to Brazilian Art
Max Perlingeiro, a pivotal figure in the Brazilian art system since the 1970s, was awarded the Ciccilo Matarazzo Prize this year by the Associação Brasileira dos Críticos de Arte (ABCA). His career began with the founding of Pinakotheke Cultural in Rio de Janeiro in January 1979, followed by a São Paulo branch in 2002 and the Multiarte space in Fortaleza in 1987. Operating as an entrepreneur, editor, curator, and administrator of 18 private and institutional collections, Perlingeiro has dedicated a third of his time to managing collections located in Fortaleza, Alagoas, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. He criticizes superficial curatorial work, emphasizing rigorous research and substantive content in art books, for which he has won the Prêmio Jabuti three times. His editorial focus includes 19th and 20th-century Brazilian art history, with publications like "Antônio Bandeira 1922-1967" and "Coleção Airton Queiroz Fortaleza/Ceará." In September, he will co-curate an exhibition exploring artist Antonio Dias's motivation to collect Leonilson's work, a project extending from shows featuring Bruno Giorgi and Alfredo Volpi currently at Pinakotheke Rio. The Multiarte in Fortaleza maintains 120 students across small classes and receives about 200 weekly visitors. Perlingeiro now shares his platform with his children Amanda, Max, and Victor, who handle exhibitions, books, and other specific matters.
