Max Mazzotta on His New Play 'Vite di Ginius' and Career

other · 2026-04-27

Actor, director, and playwright Max Mazzotta (born 1968 in Cosenza) brings his latest work 'Vite di Ginius' to Rome's Teatro Sala Umberto on January 17. The play, which debuted at the Campania Teatro Festival last summer, is a monologue about purification and consciousness, following the soul of Ginius on Charon's boat through past lives. Mazzotta rewrote the piece during the pandemic, adapting it from a multi-character script to a solo performance. The production blends poetry and prose, with video and sound used to lighten the linguistic structure. Mazzotta discusses his career, including his role as 'Gobbo' in Gabriele Mainetti's 'Freaks Out', which won a special award at the Venice Film Festival. He credits his middle school teacher for sparking his interest in theater and cites Giorgio Strehler as a key mentor. Mazzotta also co-founded the company Libero Teatro, with which he continues to work.
