Max Liebermann: German Impressionist in Rome
The Casa di Goethe in Rome presents 'Max Liebermann. An Impressionist from Berlin', a small but precious museum exhibition curated by Alice Cazzola. The show traces Liebermann's career from 1884, when he settled at Pariser Platz in Berlin, through his late works after 1909 at his Wannsee summer residence. Highlights include the 1908 self-portrait commissioned by the Uffizi, portraits of family, works inspired by Dutch painting such as 'Young Bathers with Lifeguard' (1899), and 'Walk on Monte Pincio' (1911) painted during his visit to Rome for the International Exposition. The final room features garden views with luminous effects, including 'View from the Garden Eastwards to the Entrance of the Country House' (1919). Liebermann also painted a fresco in his villa's loggia inspired by the Villa of Livia's garden, which he covered with white paint and was rediscovered in 2004 during restoration. The Liebermann Villa, now a museum, is a partner of the exhibition.
