Max Hollein appointed Met Museum director and CEO

institutional · 2026-04-24

Max Hollein, who has been at the helm of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for four years, will take on the role of chief executive, succeeding David H. Weiss upon his departure in June 2023. The board of trustees reached a unanimous decision in favor of Hollein, who successfully steered the museum through the pandemic and initiated projects such as the Great Hall series featuring Cree artist Kent Monkman and the upcoming façade commission by Hew Locke. This appointment reinstates a single-management model at the Met. Hollein's previous leadership experience includes the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and institutions in Frankfurt, such as the Städel Museum, Liebieghaus, and Schirn Kunsthalle.
