Palazzo Reale in Milan will host the first retrospective in Italy dedicated to Max Ernst (1891-1976), from October 4, 2022, to February 26, 2023. The exhibition features over 400 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages, photographs, jewelry, and illustrated books, loaned from institutions such as GAM Torino, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Ca' Pesaro Venice, Tate London, Centre Pompidou Paris, Musée Cantini Marseille, State Museums Berlin, Arp Foundation Berlin, Fondation Beyeler Basel, and Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza Madrid. Curated by Martina Mazzotta and Jürgen Pech, the show includes about 80 paintings rarely exhibited for decades. The exhibition is organized into four major periods across nine thematic rooms, tracing Ernst's biography and interdisciplinary approaches. A conceptual library of illustrated books, manuals, photographs, objects, and documents runs throughout, encouraging visitors to explore connections between sources and artworks.
