Mausoleum of Halicarnassus: The Ancient Wonder That Gave Us the Word 'Mausoleum'
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, built between 353–351 BCE for King Mausolus of Caria and his sister-wife Artemisia II, was a 45-meter-tall marble tomb adorned with 400 freestanding statues and intricate reliefs by renowned Greek sculptors Leochares, Bryaxis, Scopas, and Timotheus. Designed by architects Satyros and Pythius of Priene, the structure featured a pyramidal roof crowned by a quadriga (four-horse chariot). It was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The tomb survived Alexander the Great's conquest in 334 BCE and Roman annexation, but was progressively damaged by earthquakes from the 12th to 15th centuries CE. In 1494–1522, the Knights of St. John recycled its stones to fortify Bodrum Castle. Its legacy includes inspiring the Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome and the Masonic House of the Temple in Washington, DC, and coining the term 'mausoleum' for grand tombs.
