Mauro Staccioli's 'L'indicatore 2009' Restored and Reinstalled Near Volterra

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

On September 7, 2024, at 6 PM, Mauro Staccioli's environmental sculpture 'L'indicatore 2009' will be reinstalled at the Spicchiaiola viewpoint on the SS68 road, marking the boundary between the provinces of Pisa and Siena. The work, acquired and restored by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra, stands near the medieval tower of Montemiccioli. Staccioli (Volterra, 1937 – Milan, 2018) began his career in painting and engraving before turning to sculpture in the late 1960s. His site-specific works use simple materials like concrete and iron. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1976 and 1978, and his large-scale pieces are installed at venues including the Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma, University Gallery Amherst, Rotonda della Besana in Milan, Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato, and the Olympic Park in Seoul. In the 1990s, he experimented with geometric forms such as rings in Andorra and Munich, circles in Milan and Bergamo, and spheres in Sardinia. A diffused exhibition of his work took place in Volterra in 2009. The restoration and reinstallation of 'L'indicatore 2009' will be accompanied by a special itinerary visiting his other eleven sculptures in the Volterra area, with extended hours (10 AM to 7 PM, free entry) at the Museo Archivio Mauro Staccioli.
