Maurizio Lacavalla: The Italian Comic Book Artist Channeling David Lynch
Maurizio Lacavalla, born in Barletta in 1992, is an Italian comic book artist known for his noir, enigmatic style that challenges readers. After studying at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna (2011), he moved to Hamburg, where he refined his approach using only paper and ink. He co-founded the collective Sciame with Simone Pace, Kevin Scauri, and Lele Sorrentino. His first two comics, 'Due attese' and 'Alfabeto Simenon', were published by Edizioni BD. 'Alfabeto Simenon', created with Alberto Schiavone, graphically represents the life of Georges Simenon, creator of Maigret. Lacavalla currently works as a mediator and educator at MAMbo in Bologna and as an illustrator for school textbooks. He also collaborates with La Stampa. His work is influenced by Mark Kozelek, Sun Kil Moon, Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, Bergman, Bacon, and Ciprì e Maresco. He uses a 50mm fixed-lens camera to frame his vignettes, emphasizing partiality and shadows. His latest piece for Artribune, titled 'Padre, padre, padre', continues his series 'Le ricostruzioni del padre partito' and depicts a ghostly encounter on a train.
