Maurizio Galimberti Reimagines Leonardo's Last Supper with Polaroids
Maurizio Galimberti, an internationally renowned photographer who began his career in construction, has published a book titled "Il Cenacolo di Leonardo da Vinci a Milano" (Skira, 2019, €35). The volume presents his Polaroid interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper" fresco, housed in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Galimberti used a Fuji Instax Square SQ 20 and a Giant Camera to map the fresco, working from an HD photograph by Getty Images. The book includes both a complete reproduction and partial shots focusing on details like the Apostles and Christ, revealing chromatic alternations and conceptual facets. The project was presented at the Sala di San Domenico, adjacent to the Refectory where the original fresco is located. Galimberti emphasizes that his work is not a celebration of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death but a long-standing artistic challenge. He values artistic vision that evokes emotion over objective reality, stating that the Polaroid medium is "a true bomb of creativity." The book features text by Maurizio Rebuzzini and is edited by Federico Mininni. Galimberti's approach follows other artists like Andy Warhol and Peter Greenaway who have reinterpreted the masterpiece, always raising questions without providing definitive answers.
