Maurizio Cattelan's exclusive one-night show at Casa Malaparte on Capri
On July 9, 2025, Maurizio Cattelan (born Padua, 1960) presented 'Fear of Painting' at Casa Malaparte on Capri, a one-night-only exhibition accessible only by boat and by invitation, with photography prohibited. Organized by Gagosian gallery, the show featured marble sculptures including busts, hands holding lifeless birds on stacks of closed books, and faces obscured by hands gripping cheeks and eyes, engaging with the rationalist architecture of the house. This follows Cattelan's solo show 'Sunday' at Gagosian's New York space in May 2025. Casa Malaparte, designed in 1938 by writer Curzio Malaparte (pseudonym of Kurt Erich Suckert) and completed in 1941, has hosted previous one-night exhibitions by artists such as Rudolf Stingel, Mark Grotjahn, Brice Marden, Shio Kusaka, and Jonas Wood. Gagosian also paid homage to Malaparte with a New York exhibition in September 2022, recreating the living room featured in Jean-Luc Godard's 1963 film 'Le Mépris' and displaying archival materials including first editions of Malaparte's books and magazines he edited.
