Mauritshuis Museum digitized in gigapixel for virtual tour
The Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague has become the first museum in the world to be fully digitized in gigapixel, launching a virtual tour on November 26, 2020. The project, developed with Spanish company Madpixel, uses a robot called Madpixel ROB to capture every centimeter of the museum's interior and artworks with 360-degree cameras. The resulting high-definition environment is accessible via the museum's website and the Second Canvas app (available on AppStore and Google Play). Visitors can choose between a free exploration mode or an introductory tour highlighting masterpieces such as Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Rembrandt's Self-Portrait, and The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. The digitization was prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced cultural institutions to adopt digital platforms for remote engagement.
