Maurice Denis: The Nabi of Beautiful Icons

Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was a French painter and critic who co-founded the Nabi group in 1888. His work combined formal innovation with deep Catholic faith, producing vibrant, spiritually charged paintings. Denis's early Nabi period emphasized bold color blocks and abstraction, influenced by Gauguin and Symbolism. He later adopted a neoclassical style inspired by Italian Renaissance masters like Raphael and Michelangelo, as seen in his 1908 series 'L'Histoire de Psyché' commissioned by Russian collector Ivan Morozov. Denis also designed stained glass, tapestries, and ceramics, and illustrated works by Verlaine and Debussy. In 1919 he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré for church renovation. His 1890 manifesto 'Définition du néo-traditionalisme' anticipated modernist abstraction. Denis died in 1943 after being hit by a car. His legacy includes influencing Kandinsky's 'Concerning the Spiritual in Art' and later movements like De Stijl and Abstract Expressionism. Recent publications include 'Maurice Denis.
