Maura Banfo's 'Gita al Faro' at SRISA Gallery in Florence

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The SRISA Gallery of Contemporary Art in Florence is hosting Maura Banfo's exhibition 'Gita al Faro' until October 15, 2016. Curated by Pietro Gaglianò, the show features photographs and polaroids that explore themes of interior journey, meditation, and identity, inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel 'To the Lighthouse'. For the first time in Banfo's work, her own body appears, shown listening to a seashell, which becomes a symbol of home, nest, and refuge. Circular motifs recur in the rhythm of waves, the spiral of the shell, and the meditative journey of self-discovery. Banfo, born in Turin in 1969, uses these elements to convey a sense of detachment from the world and immersion in contemplative quiet.
