Maupal's San Nicola Mural Bridges East and West in Bari
Street artist Maupal, known for his Superman-style portrait of Pope Francis, has created a new mural titled #eastwest in Bari's historic center for the Feast of San Nicola. The work, on the walls of the Acquedotto Pugliese building, depicts Saint Nicholas as a bridge between East and West, referencing the saint's veneration by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians, as well as the plight of migrants. The title is inspired by Psalm 103:12. The project is sponsored by Work in Progress 10 APS, lead of the Nikolaosroute, under the patronage of the Assessorato alle Culture of the Comune di Bari. This is the second time Bari has commissioned a street art piece for its patron saint; previously, Ozmo created three portraits of Saint Nicholas. Maupal's intervention in Piazza Diaz will cement the link between Bari and the saint's cult, part of a European pilgrimage route to the Basilica of Bari.
