Maupal's Lennon mural for Padua soup kitchen unites Abrahamic faiths

artist · 2026-04-27

Street artist Maupal created a mural for the Cucine economiche popolari di Padova, a century-old soup kitchen serving vulnerable people. The work, titled "Non di solo pane" (Not by bread alone), was unveiled January 11–12, 2020, during extended opening hours. It depicts John Lennon with three faces evoking a rabbi, a priest, and an imam, referencing Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Behind the faces are fragments of scriptures in Orthodox Greek, Latin, and ancient Arabic. The background colors—blue (Israel's flag), gold (Vatican), and green (associated with Muhammad and Muslim nations)—further symbolize the three Abrahamic faiths. The project was realized with associations Jeos and Domna. Maupal painted live while a former guest chef prepared an aperitif. A numbered print of his iconic "Superpope" was auctioned, with proceeds donated to the soup kitchen. Maupal revealed that Pope Francesco keeps photos of his works on his phone and visited a commissioned piece in Albano Laziale in October 2019. Organizers Antonio Ceccagno (Jeos) and Paola Spinuso (Domna) stated Maupal was their first choice for his wit, irony, and sensitivity. Padua was European Capital of Volunteering in 2020.
