Maupal brings street art to Barolo wine cellar

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Street artist Mauro Pallotta, known as Maupal, has created a permanent installation at the historic headquarters of Terre da Vino | Vite Colte in Barolo, Piedmont. Titled "Le stagioni del vino" (The Seasons of Wine), the project consists of sixteen panels—eight by Maupal and eight photographic works by Pierluigi Vaccaneo—depicting the wine production cycle from vines to bottling. The works are displayed both outside and inside the cellar, including the Sala dei Nebbioli, the technological cellar, the Sala delle Barbere, and the Sala Imbottigliamento, each accompanied by captions explaining the production process. Maupal gained notoriety in Rome for his politically charged murals, such as "Street Pope" (2016) and "Super Pope," which were repeatedly censored and destroyed. Rome's Councillor for Culture Luca Bergamo later welcomed him to the Campidoglio, expressing regret over the destruction and displaying a reproduction of his work. The Barolo installation marks a shift from controversial urban interventions to a sanctioned, thematic project in a wine context.
