MAUA: Milan's Augmented Reality Street Art Museum Launches in Peripheral Districts
MAUA (Museo di Arte Urbana Aumentata), an augmented reality street art museum, launches in Milan on December 17, 2017, at BASE. The project originates from "Milano Città Aumentata," which won the "Bando alle Periferie" call by the Municipality of Milan, selected among over 150 proposals. It is one of 14 projects for urban regeneration in five peripheral areas: Giambellino-Lorenteggio, Adriano-Padova-Rizzoli, Corvetto-Chiaravalle-Porto di Mare, Niguarda-Bovisa, and QT8-Gallaratese. During September and October 2017, residents, students, and associations from these neighborhoods participated in research, creating the largest mapping of Milan's street art with 218 works and alternative tours. A participatory selection process involving hundreds of inhabitants, students from CFP Bauer school, and associations resulted in 50 representative murals. These works are animated via the Bepart app using augmented reality, transforming them into digital art pieces created by 50 young animation designers during a workshop at BASE. The launch event on December 17 includes a photographic exhibition of the 50 works, a catalog, and paper maps curated by Terre di mezzo. A guided tour in Giambellino starts at 11 AM, with the exhibition open to the public from 3 PM at BASE, via Bergognone 34. From December 18, tours can be booked at mauamuseum.com. The project echoes a similar comprehensive street art mapping in Rome by Artribune and Toyota.
